SWE Interviews in the Age of AI

Audience: CS Graduates, early career, career switchers, job hunters30 min - 1 hour

Outline

The software engineering interview has changed—and not just because of layoffs or tougher competition. AI is reshaping how companies evaluate candidates, how problems are framed, and what “good engineering” even means. In this interactive session, Terrell McKinney—software engineer, former bootcamp instructor, and nonprofit educator—walks participants through a full modern interview loop, from recruiter screen to offer negotiation. Together, we’ll map today’s interview landscape, practice behavioral and technical questions using real prompts, and examine how (and when) AI fits into the process without compromising integrity or understanding. This session blends discussion, hands-on exercises, and debriefs. Participants will practice STAR responses, work through a technical problem collaboratively, sketch a simple system design, and talk candidly about negotiation and culture fit. The goal isn’t to “beat” interviews—it’s to understand how decisions are made and how to show up clearly, confidently, and honestly in a shifting market. Best for: students, early-career engineers, career switchers, and anyone preparing for technical interviews in 2025–2026.
